Your Family Dentist in the St. Cloud Minnesota Area
Also known as “laughing gas”, this method of mild sedation allows you to feel more relaxed during dental procedures. You will feel more relaxed, but will still be awake and responsive.
One of the main benefits of nitrous oxide is that the level of gas given can be easily changed depending on how relaxed you feel. The sedation effects are also gone within 10-15 minutes of removing the nitrous mask from your nose, so you can go about your daily tasks when you leave our office and do not need a driver.
Our office provides oral sedation with several different types of medication, one of which will be selected based on your health, age, dental treatment plan, and desired effect. Nitrous oxide can be administered in addition to the oral sedative if indicated. You will take the medication approximately one hour prior to dental treatment. Most oral sedation patients report feeling very relaxed and do not remember much of what happens during their appointment. The level of sedation reached is almost always higher than that reached with nitrous oxide alone. If you are prescribed an oral sedative, you will need a trusted friend or family member to drive you to and from your dental appointments, as well as someone to stay with you until the effects of the sedative have worn off.
If you are unable to replace your single missing tooth with an implant, a natural tooth bridge is another option. The bridge consists of two crowns with a “fake” tooth in the middle that fills the gap where you are missing a tooth. A bridge is often a good option if crowns are already recommended due to large fillings or cavities on the teeth on either side of a space.
During the dental procedure a small amount of tooth structure is removed from the teeth in front of and behind the missing tooth (similar to taking the icing off a cake). A mold or impression is then taken of these teeth, and a temporary bridge is placed. A custom-made gold or white porcelain bridge is created at the dental lab. You will return for a second visit approximately two weeks later to have the bridge cemented over the natural teeth. The bridge will be fixed in place and is not removable.
Medical Arts Dental is one of the only general dentist practices in the area that offers IV conscious sedation. After considering health concerns and treatment needs, your dentist will consult with you to decide if IV sedation is a good option. Sedatives are administered through an IV, which allows us to add more medication throughout the dental procedure if needed. You will be deeply relaxed and will not remember much of your appointment, but you will still be breathing on your own and not completely unconscious, as you would be with general sedation at the hospital.
